Develop a Realistic Plan

In a recent study conducted with junior high school students, over 20% of the students surveyed indicated that they planned on becoming a professional athlete when they grew up.  Unfortunately only one out of every 22,000 people will become a professional athlete.  You are actually ten times more likely to suffer a fatal fall from slipping in the shower than you are likely to become a professional athlete.  Over 18% of the students surveyed said they planned on becoming a famous actor when they grew up, and 16% wanted to be a famous musician.  The odds of becoming either a famous actor or famous musician is about one in 3,040,597

Reality for High School Students

  • Odds of being an astronaut: 13,200,000 to 1
  • Odds of winning an Olympic medal: 662,000 to 1
  • Odds of striking it rich on Antiques Roadshow: 60,000 to 1
  • Unemployment rate of the Screen Actors Guild: 85%

Still Not Convinced?  Visit the U.S. Census Bureau for unbiased data on what you can reasonably expect to earn without some level of school achievement. . According to the most recent statistics, median earnings in the Unites States ranged from about $19,000 for those with less than a high school diploma to over $60,000 for those with an advanced degree. High school graduates earned about $27,000, while those with a bachelor’s degree earned about $47,000. Median earnings for a worker with a bachelor’s degree were 74 percent higher than median earnings for a worker with a high school diploma alone, and median earnings for an advanced degree were 31 percent higher than earnings for a bachelor’s degree.  It is important to develop a realistic plan and set rewards for yourself as you achieve your goals.
